A Love Letter to Student Radio
Student Radio?
Since 2023, I've been a part of my University's student radio organization. This experience has been incredibly rewarding in giving me an outlet to express myself through music live on air. Throughout my time in college I have met so many people through student radio and plan to meet many more in the remaining year I have until I graduate. I know I'll miss it when I leave so I'm determined to cherish it for the next year. I am currently in the process of writing two radio dramas and I'm excited to see them come to life this year!
Analog Static (2023-2026)
Analog Static is the name of the longest running of the two radio shows I've been a part of. Co-hosting with my friend Troy, Analog Static served as a much-needed break from the hectic nature of college and provided us and our listeners (mostly friends/family) with an hour of entertainment and relaxation. It's pretty bittersweet now that Troy has graduated and the show has come to an end but watching the show evolve over time has been such an incredible experience. Some of the most fun during this time came from shows where we would invite some friends on to either pick some songs, talk, or just hang out in the studio while the show was going on. In our time on the air, Analog Static created a bunch of banger shows, and even a radio drama (see: Fleeing Dystopia). Doing student radio with a friend has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my time in college.
Static Age Radio (May 2024 - August 2024)
When Summer of 2024 came around, I had just secured a co-op internship position in the same town as my University, so I knew I'd be staying in town. Troy, however, was headed to another state for a summer internship. With a desire to continue participating in student radio, I decided to do a new show by myself that would just last for the summer, until Troy returned. This program became Static Age Radio. This show had a slightly more focused premise/restraint. The gimmick for this show was that every week would follow a theme, but the music played had to come from my personal collection of records. This constraint ended up proving to be a fun challenge, forcing me to create a cohesive stream of songs while having a much more limited selection. Every few shows, I decided to host a 'Variety Hour' where I'd invite 3 friends with record collections over to the studio and we would each pick around 4 songs. These ended up being some of my favorite moments from my time on Static Age Radio that summer and I hope to make more similar memories by the time I graduate.
